Baltimore 8, at Texas 1: Scott Moore and Luke Scott hit early home runs and the Orioles ruined the Rangers’ home opener by retaining the AL’s best record (6-1) with their sixth straight victory. Aubrey Huff matched a career high with four hits and drove in four runs.
Kansas City 5, New York 2: In a matchup of top young pitchers, the Royals’ Brian Bannister (2-0) bested Phil Hughes (0-1). Ross Gload drove in two runs for the Royals, who at 5-2 under new Manager Trey Hillman are off to their best start since 2003 when they were 9-0.
Oakland 9, at Toronto 8: Ryan Sweeney hit a tiebreaking triple in the ninth inning to help the Athletics end the Blue Jays’ three-game winning streak. Alan Embree (1-1) got the win despite giving up a two-run homer to Frank Thomas in the eighth to make it 8-8.
Seattle 6, at Tampa Bay 5: Erik Bedard (1-0) struggled through six innings but improved to 11-3 against the Devil Rays despite giving up five runs and five hits. Richie Sexson drove in three runs, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the third and hitting a two-run single in the sixth.
at Boston 5, Detroit 0: The Tigers fell to 0-7 by managing only five singles, committing two errors and giving up 12 hits, six walks and a balk.
Cleveland 4, at Angels 3: Travis Hafner hit a two-run homer off emergency closer Justin Speier with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Indians.
