A former Los Angeles Police Department detective pleaded guilty Thursday to one felony count of insurance fraud for collecting workers’ compensation while moonlighting as a bodyguard for celebrities.
Gilbert Barrow, 38, a 12-year LAPD veteran from the Rampart Division, was sentenced to five years of supervised probation, 50 hours of community service and $45,000 restitution.
He was ostensibly recovering from on-duty injuries to a knee and heel when a police surveillance team discovered him working for a security company, Deputy Dist. Atty. Renee Korn said. The employment lasted from Sept. 26, 2005, to April 11, 2006.
Barrow resigned from the department Sept. 11, 2007, Korn said. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Stuart Rice dismissed another charge of attempted perjury against Barrow for allegedly denying his side job during a deposition, Korn said.
