Police say rightist was speeding

Far-right politician Joerg Haider was speeding at more than twice the posted limit before the car crash that killed him, investigators say.
Austrian police reconstructing Saturday’s accident in the southern province of Carinthia, where Haider was governor, said the speedometer of Haider’s high-powered Volkswagen Phaeton was stuck at 142 kilometers per hour (88 mph). The posted limit at the crash site is 70 (44 mph).
Haider’s Alliance for Austria’s Future named Stefan Petzner as his successor.
