Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 1, Dana Hills 0
Top contributors: Left-hander Tyler Matzek pitched a two-hit shutout, giving him 14 scoreless innings against the Dolphins in two games this season. Matzek struck out 12 and did not issue a walk. Dana Hills’ Eric Ehlow was nearly as good, giving up five hits and one run in 6 1/3 innings and striking out four.
The scoop: With the game scoreless in the seventh inning, Kyle Hunt singled, stole second base and scored on Steve McMichael’s double.
Why it matters: The Cougars moved one game ahead of Dana Hills in the South Coast League standings before their third meeting of the season Friday at Capistrano Valley.
Records: Capistrano Valley, 15-5, 6-2; Dana Hills 12-8, 5-3.
