Going offshore to power the ports

Re: “Greening the ports,” Aug. 23:
It’s good to see progress toward cleaner air in our region. However, the article said nothing about where Southern California Edison and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will get the extra power when this project reaches fruition and more ships are able to get electricity in port.
It’s time to press for using existing offshore infrastructure to access the known billions of barrels of oil and cubic-feet of natural gas. New drilling methods can be used at the platforms off Santa Barbara where there have been no serious problems for 40 years. Further, the state could benefit by imposing a severance tax on new recovery.
