Dodgers sign pitcher Claudio Vargas

The Dodgers have signed right-hander Claudio Vargas, a journeyman who will be a candidate for the back end of their starting rotation.
Vargas, 30, signed a one-year deal. He will be paid a base salary of $400,000 and can earn an additional $1.4 million in incentives.
Pitching for five teams over six major league seasons, Vargas has a record of 46-40 with a 4.94 earned-run average. He has pitched in 164 games, making 114 starts.
Last season, Vargas was 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 11 games with the New York Mets before being designated for assignment in June. He spent the remainder of the year in the minors.
Vargas is playing winter ball in his native Dominican Republic and has a 3-1 record with a 4.02 ERA in six starts.
