Oliver, Angels agree to deal

The Angels and Darren Oliver avoided arbitration Friday by reaching terms on a contract that will pay the left-handed reliever $3.665 million.

Oliver, 38, was 7-1 with a career-best 2.88 earned-run average in 54 games last season, when he made $1.75 million.

The agreement between Oliver and the team leaves four Angels -- pitcher Ervin Santana, catcher Mike Napoli and infielders Robb Quinlan and Maicer Izturis -- unsigned.

The club and the players are scheduled to exchange arbitration figures Tuesday with arbitration hearings to begin Feb. 1 in Phoenix.

Reliever Grant Balfour agreed to a $1.4-million, one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, avoiding arbitration. . . . Greg Dobbs and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a $2.5-million, two-year contract that avoided arbitration for the pinch-hitting specialist. . . . The Chicago Cubs and infielder Ronny Cedeno have agreed to a one-year contract worth $822,500. . . . Former Dodgers right-hander Matt Herges and Jack Cassel -- the older brother of New England quarterback Matt Cassel -- agreed to minor league contracts with the Cleveland Indians. . . . Catcher Gregg Zaun reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles, where he would fill the starting role vacated by the trade of Ramon Hernandez to the Cincinnati Reds.

The Dodgers are hosting their second “Under the Lights” promotion tonight from 5-8 at Dodger Stadium.
