These streaks find their own end zone

Some ingenious, confident Anaheim Servite supporter had the audacity to think the Friars might actually win Friday night for the first time since 1988 against Santa Ana Mater Dei. We know that because fireworks went off after Servite’s 30-20 victory in front of more than 10,000 at Santa Ana Stadium.

Santa Ana wasn’t the only place where celebrations took place after a streak ended.

Lakewood Mayfair had won 52 consecutive Suburban League games until La Mirada’s 42-12 victory. Daniel Poncedeleon completed 19 of 24 passes for 173 yards. La Mirada (6-1, 3-0) plays unbeaten Norwalk (7-0, 3-0) next week.

Long Beach Millikan defeated Long Beach Poly, 35-34 in double overtime, giving the Rams their first win over Poly since 1985. Alden Darby, filling in at quarterback because of an injury, completed 10 of 13 passes for 137 yards and four touchdowns.

La Canada St. Francis got a three-yard touchdown pass from Justin Posthuma to Travis Talianko with 11 seconds left to defeat Los Angeles Loyola, 27-23. It was the Golden Knights’ first victory over Loyola since 1982.

Dana Point Dana Hills got its first victory over San Clemente since 1991 with a 38-14 win. Brandon Howe rushed for 117 yards.

And don’t forget that Lakewood ended Poly’s 80-game Moore League winning streak this season.

Next week, Woodland Hills El Camino Real (7-0) will try to defeat Woodland Hills Taft in a West Valley League game for the first time since 1991.

Could all this streak-busting mean parity is returning to high school football?

On the run

Senior running back Jesse Callier of Downey Warren has been close to unstoppable this season. He rushed for 294 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 38-21 victory over Lynwood.

In four of his seven games, he has rushed for more than 200 yards. His season total is 1,781 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. He has committed to Washington.

Collision course

Gardena Serra and Los Angeles Cathedral, both 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Del Rey League, appear headed for a league title decider on Nov. 13 at Serra. And quite a matchup at quarterback is brewing.

Serra’s Conner Preston completed 21 of 28 passes for 293 yards and one touchdown in a 34-6 victory over North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake. Cathedral’s Trevor Olson completed 27 of 40 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns in a 46-10 victory over Playa del Rey St. Bernard.
