Tempe, Ariz. — Angels 1, Milwaukee 1 (10 innings)
AT THE PLATE:Brandon Wood drew walks in his first two plate appearances and dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance two runners in the seventh inning. That set up a score-tying, sacrifice fly by Michael Ryan. The Angels had only seven hits, including Juan Rivera’s fourth-inning double.
ON THE MOUND: Scott Kazmir, scratched from his last start because of tightness in his shoulder, looked sound during a five-inning stint in which he allowed one run and four hits, struck out two and walked none, and threw 71 pitches. “It was a big step,” said Kazmir, who expects to be ready for the start of the season.
EXTRA BASES: The Angels, on the verge of opening the season without a player on the disabled list, got a scare in the seventh when Jeff Mathis was hit on the back of the left hand by a Claudio Vargas fastball. The catcher suffered a bruise, “but he should be OK,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. … Hideki Matsui played seven innings in left field, fielding one routine fly ball.
UP NEXT:Jered Weaver will tune up for his expected opening-day start in a 1 p.m. game Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs and right-hander Carlos Zambrano in Mesa, Ariz.
ON THE AIR: Radio: 830.
