Native Treasures: Indian Arts Festival
When, where: May 22 and 23, Santa Fe Convention Center
Highlights: The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture brings together nearly 200 Native American artists to showcase their pieces. The festival also features an emerging-artist section, live music and a presale cocktail party on May 21.
Cost: $5 on Saturday, free on Sunday.

VICTORIA, CANADA
Highland Games & Celtic Festival
When, where: May 22 and 23, Topaz Park
Highlights: During this 147th annual event, athletes compete in strength events and rock and bagpipe bands perform; other contests include highland dancing, sheep dog herding and haggis hurling. Cannon and musket demonstrations top things off.
Cost: $10; $8 for seniors and children age 12 and older; ages 11 and younger are free. Two-day discounts available.

SAN FRANCISCO
Carnaval
When, where: May 29 and 30, Mission Street
Highlights: More than 400,000 people are expected at this annual Mardi Gras-like celebration of Latin American and Caribbean cultures. The main attraction is the exuberant parade of costumes, but also worth experiencing are the dance and drum lessons, the food, the eco-festival, the health pavilion and the kids’ zone.
