Placido Domingo is bringing Operalia to Los Angeles in August

Operalia, the annual opera competition organized by Plácido Domingo, will take place in Los Angeles this year, marking the event’s first return to the L.A. area since 2004.
The competition is scheduled to take place Aug. 25 to 30 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and will feature certain performances that will be open to the public. Last year’s Operalia took place in Verona, Italy.
L.A. Opera, where Domingo serves as general director, will be the host this year. The competition features young opera singers at the beginning of their careers, with judges awarding prizes in eight categories.
The top prizes for male and female singers come with monetary awards of $30,000 each. Organizers will select 40 applicants who are 18 to 32 years old to compete.

The deadline for applying for this year’s Operalia is March 15.
Recent cities to have hosted Operalia include Beijing in 2012, Moscow in 2011 and Milan, Italy, in 2010.
Domingo launched Operalia in 1993, and the annual event has helped to spotlight singers who have gone on to become international stars, including Erwin Schrott, Joyce DiDonato and Rolando Villazón.
