Emmy nominations will likely cause drama for some dramas

Forget “The Voice” and “Amazing Race.” TV’s ultimate competition show is about to begin as the TV world finally finds out what shows landed a slot in the top categories for the 66th Primetime Emmys.

Carson Daly (“The Voice”) and Mindy Kaling (“The Mindy Project”) will join Bruce Rosenblum, the chairman and chief executive of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, to announce the nominees beginning at 5:40 a.m. PT.

And all eyes should be directed to the drama category. There are a whopping 108 shows up for consideration -- 108 -- and just six slots to be filled! It’s prompted some shows to be creative with their classification -- comedy! miniseries! -- to increase their chances for recognition.

Following yet another year that has produced a hefty amount of high-quality dramas from around the TV dial, Thursday’s announcements will undoubtedly elicit some cries of shock that rival those that came out of Brazil’s defeat Tuesday by Germany.

Will “Game of Thrones” finally break through? Could “Homeland” be left behind? After wrapping last September, have the voting members forgotten The Danger (Bryan Cranston) and “Breaking Bad”? Has “The Good Wife’s” buzzy season brought them back to Emmy life? Has “House of Cards” lost its new appeal to “True Detective”?
