Polaroid-style portraits of TIFF stars from the L.A. Times’ festival photo studio
Stars of the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival photographed in the L.A. Times’ photo and video studio.
(Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times)Working to have something unique from The Times’ studio presence at the major film festivals, staff photographer Jay L. Clendenin continues his use of a 1960s-era Polaroid Land Camera and what remains of his Fuji FP-100C instant print film. Often called “Polaroid” because of the camera and history of the instant delivery of the image, the camera allows for a couple minutes of calm in an otherwise frenetic environment of a movie cast passing through the studio every 15 minutes during the 41st annual Toronto International Film Festival. Using the vintage camera doesn’t always produce the sharpest images, but being able to create a single moment in time, rendered permanently to emulsion and paper, outweighs the challenges of using an analog medium.
