Arnold Schwarzenegger and Channing Tatum proved to be no match for a young girl named Riley at the Friday box office.
According to Box Office Mojo, high-profile Fourth of July holiday newcomers “Terminator: Genisys,” starring Schwarzenegger in his famous role and “Magic Mike XXL,” starring Tatum and his washboard abs, placed third and fourth at the box office on Friday.
Disney/Pixar’s acclaimed animated “Inside Out,” which revolves around the five emotions inside Riley’s head, earned an estimated $12.5 million, bringing the family film’s 15-day total to $228.6 million. The dinos-on-the-rampage thriller “Jurassic World,” which has ruled the box office for the last three weeks, placed second with an estimated $11.8 million for a 22-day total of $539 million.
“Terminator: Genisys,” the fifth in the “Terminator” franchise, earned an estimated $10.7 million Friday, bringing its three-day total to $26 million. Critically, “Genisys” scored a paltry 27% fresh rating with critics on the Rotten Tomatoes website, but earned a Cinemascore of B-plus among moviegoers.
The last movie in the series, 2009’s “Terminator Salvation,” earned $42.6 million in its opening weekend and grossed $125.3 million domestically. “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” which opened July 3, 1991, brought in $31.8 million that holiday weekend and went on to gross $204.9 million domestically.
“Magic Mike XXL,” which also opened Wednesday, brought in an estimated $6.3 million Friday for a three-day total of $21.3 million. The film fared far better with critics than “Genisys,” earning a 62% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Cinemascore of A-minus.
However, it will have to bust a few moves at the box office Saturday and Sunday to outperform the opening weekend three years ago of the original surprise hit “Magic Mike,” which earned a robust $39.1 million during the Fourth of July weekend. “Magic Mike” eventually grossed $113.7 million domestically.
The No. 5 and No. 6 spots went to a foul-mouthed talking teddy bear and a Belgian Malinois military dog.
“Ted 2,” Seth MacFarlane’s sequel to his 2012 blockbuster comedy “Ted,” brought in an estimated $4.4 million Friday for an eight-day total of $51.7 million, while the family film “Max,” starring a pooch named Carlos, earned an estimated $2.6 million for an eight-day total of $21.4 million.
