Maimoun Camara scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on an assist from Jose Sanchez with less than a minute left in the first half.
The goal gave Cabrillo, the No. 9-ranked team in the Southland by The Times, a 3-1 lead. But the Jaguars (16-1-1, 4-0) had to withstand a furious onslaught by defending Southern Section Division I champion Wilson in the second half. Wilson (7-6-1, 3-1) narrowed its deficit to 3-2 with 15 minutes left in the game when Morgan Boswell headed in an indirect free kick from Sam Camacho, but the Bruins failed to convert a couple of quality scoring opportunities in the closing minutes.
Wilson, which was 11-0-4 in its 15 previous league games, took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game when J.D. Skogard scored. Cabrillo, which is trying to win the school’s first league title in any sport, tied the score, 1-1, on a penalty kick by Freddy Tapia at the 11-minute mark and took a 2-1 lead 17 minutes later when Arturo Cota’s left-footed shot was deflected by a Wilson defender and past goalkeeper Chris Dewalt.
Eight yellow cards were issued in the game in which nearly 60 fouls were called and two spectators were ejected.
