Tapia broke a scoreless tie 15 minutes into the second half and Cota scored eight minutes later for Cabrillo (17-1-1, 5-0), which was playing without three starters who received either a red card or a yellow-red card during a 3-2 victory against Long Beach Wilson on Wednesday. Compton is 2-4-1, 1-4.

Towa Manda scored his eighth goal of the season in the eighth minute to help No. 2-ranked Fountain Valley remain two points behind first-place Edison in the league standings. The shutout was the 10th of the season for visiting Fountain Valley (14-2-1, 3-1). Marina, the runner-up in the Division I playoffs last year, is 5-8-3, 1-3 in league.

Maimoun Camara scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on an assist from Jose Sanchez with less than a minute left in the first half.

The goal gave Cabrillo, the No. 9-ranked team in the Southland by The Times, a 3-1 lead. But the Jaguars (16-1-1, 4-0) had to withstand a furious onslaught by defending Southern Section Division I champion Wilson in the second half. Wilson (7-6-1, 3-1) narrowed its deficit to 3-2 with 15 minutes left in the game when Morgan Boswell headed in an indirect free kick from Sam Camacho, but the Bruins failed to convert a couple of quality scoring opportunities in the closing minutes.

Wilson, which was 11-0-4 in its 15 previous league games, took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game when J.D. Skogard scored. Cabrillo, which is trying to win the school’s first league title in any sport, tied the score, 1-1, on a penalty kick by Freddy Tapia at the 11-minute mark and took a 2-1 lead 17 minutes later when Arturo Cota’s left-footed shot was deflected by a Wilson defender and past goalkeeper Chris Dewalt.

Eight yellow cards were issued in the game in which nearly 60 fouls were called and two spectators were ejected.

Goalkeeper John Timoti had a point-blank save in the second overtime to protect the Edison lead.

Matt Kristoff scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, for host Esperanza (16-2-1, 2-1). Blake Etherton had the other goal for the Aztecs, the No. 3-ranked team in the Southland by The Times. Jon Kelsey and Chris Sauter each scored a goal for Huntington Beach, which has lost all three of its league games by one goal. Wednesday’s loss was the second in overtime for the Oilers.
