Sean Merritt rushed for 149 yards and scored four touchdowns, with three coming on the ground and one through the air on a 15-yard reception, for Verbum Dei (5-1, 2-0) in a victory over visiting St. Anthony (1-6, 0-2).

Reggie Dunn rushed four times for 100 yards, including 70 on a touchdown run that gave the Eagles their final margin of victory in the fourth quarter. The Eagles rushed for 380 yards in 21 carries overall against St. Anthony.

The Serra League will get the showdown many fans have been looking for.

Santa Ana Mater Dei used a stifling defense to get past Bellflower St. John Bosco Saturday night at Santa Ana Stadium and set up a battle next week against Los Angeles Loyola that should determine the champion of one of the toughest leagues in the state.

Mater Dei (6-1, 2-0) held St. John Bosco scoreless until late in the game and allowed only 123 rushing yards to set up the game against Loyola, which is also unbeaten in the five-team league.

“I told the kids this was an important game because we needed to have momentum going into next week,” Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson said. “If we get hit in the mouth in this game then we go in there scrambling and you don’t want that against a team like Loyola.”

St. John Bosco (4-2, 1-1) got 55 of its rushing yards its final two plays, a 38-yard run by Craig Williams and a 17-yard touchdown, also by Williams with 3 minutes, 9 seconds to play.

Daniel Jenkins, the season rushing leader for St. john Bosco, had only 27 yards in nine carries. Mater Dei also forced three St. John Bosco fumbles, one of which Isaiah Reupena retuned 27 yards for a touchdown.

The Mater Dei running game took care of things on offense. James Brunt had 113 yards and three touchdowns in 21 carries and Rick Russell had 115 yards and a touchdown in 11 carries.

A classic tale-of-two-halves football game had a distinctly nontraditional ending Friday night as Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula and Manhattan Beach Mira Costa played to a 27-27 tie in a Bay League game at Mira Costa.

Peninsula (6-0-1 overall, 1-0-1 in league) used a dominant defense and a bruising running game to erase a 24-7 halftime deficit, but the Panthers couldn’t capitalize on two chances to win late in the game.

Ben Bobit, who returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown that cut Mira Costa’s lead to 24-14, missed an extra-point kick after the Panthers had tied the score at 27-27 on a one-yard plunge by quarterback Theo Nikolakopulos with 1 minute 11 seconds left.

After an Erik Pedersen interception gave the Peninsula the ball at the Mira Costa 28, Bobit missed a 41-yard field goal as time expired.

“There’s no such thing as a good tie,” Peninsula Coach Tony Urburu said. “We don’t feel fortunate. We came here to win.”

Early on, Mira Costa (3-3-1, 1-0-1), the four-time defending league champion, looked as if it would run away with the game. Britton Ertman had 184 of his 209 rushing yards and all three of his touchdowns in the first half.

Peninsula, however, allowed only 100 yards and three first downs in the second half.

Garrett Green, Rodney Glass and Cary Harris, members of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame’s 400-meter relay team that finished fifth in the state last spring, left no doubt about their speed Friday night in reinforcing their reputation as perhaps the fastest football backfield in school history.

Glass rushed for 131 yards and scored two touchdowns, Harris gained 110 yards and scored two touchdowns and Green added 89 yards and one touchdown as the unbeaten Knights (7-0, 2-0) cruised to a 43-14 victory over Santa Fe Springs St. Paul in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

“Those guys do a great job when they get into the open field,” said Notre Dame Coach Kevin Rooney, whose team has won 15 consecutive games since losing to St. Paul, 24-21, last season.

Green, a junior quarterback who also passed for 95 yards, ran 57 yards for a touchdown on a draw play.

Glass, the 200-meter champion in the Mission League, had touchdown runs of 10 and 13 yards. And Harris’ most impressive burst of speed came when St. Paul tailback Dwight Tardy seemed headed for a touchdown, only to be dragged down from behind by a charging Harris.

Notre Dame’s offensive line, led by guard Anthony Santa Croce, was in top form. And so was Knight junior kicker Kai Forbath, who made field goals of 18 and 20 yards, making him 14 of 14 on field-goal attempts. He also sent eight kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks, giving him 44 touchbacks in 53 kickoffs this season.

Tardy did his best to keep St. Paul (4-3, 1-1) competitive, rushing for 178 yards in 14 carries and scoring on a 10-yard run with 3:20 left in the first quarter to briefly tie the score, 7-7.

But the Swordsmen couldn’t stop Notre Dame’s rushing attack.

The Knights scored on all four of their first-half possessions and rolled up 259 yards rushing in opening a 24-7 halftime lead.

Notre Dame’s defense was burned for several long gainers in the first half. Tardy had runs of 28 and 42 yards. Tight end Phil Molina seemed to roam the field uncovered, catching three passes for 96 yards.

But the Knights, who are trying to win their third consecutive Southern Sections Division III championship, countered with interceptions by Green, Matthew Estrada and Shane Horton.

Brandon Edwards rushed for 226 yards in 22 carries and scored twice to lead the Panthers in a Mt. Baldy League game at Chaffey.

Edwards, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound senior, scored on a seven-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Diamond Ranch a 14-7 lead. He added a 62-yard touchdown run with 7:59 left. Edwards has rushed for 1,343 yards in 157 carries this season.

Diamond Ranch (5-1-1, 2-0) had 151 total yards in the first half but did not score an offensive touchdown. Charles Brown, a 6-6, 250-pound defensive end who has committed to USC, knocked the ball from Chaffey quarterback Jorge Gonzalez midway through the second quarter and pounced on it in the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Chaffey (6-1, 1-1), which had accumulated only nine total yards and no first downs to that point, followed with a six-play, 66-yard drive that was capped by running back David Naeta’s 10-yard touchdown reception from Gonzalez, tying the score, 7-7.

The Tigers drove to the nine-yard line late in the first half, but Gonzalez was sacked for a loss of 11 yards and, two plays later, could not get out of bounds on a scramble to stop the clock before time expired.

A Pac-5 League football game between Atascadero and Righetti highs that was to take place Friday night at Righetti has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday as a result of a bomb threat made by an Atascadero student at that school Friday morning, Greyhounds Coach Vic Cooper said.

Police were called, and bomb-dectecting dogs were used in a sweep of the campus, which was evacuated just before noon. According to Cooper, no explosives were found, but the disturbance left the Greyhounds’ players and coaches unable to return to school to retreive their football gear, prompting postponement of the game.

“I don’t imagine they were very happy. I wasn’t very happy, either. We wanted to play tonight,” Cooper said. “But everybody’s safe and sound.”

Atascadero is 2-4, with an 0-1 mark in Pac-5 League play. Rigehetti is 3-4, including 0-1 in league.

Junior Donnell Fulford gained 196 yards and scored on runs of 14, two and nine yards and junior Joey Madrid had five carries for 88 yards and scored on a one-yard run for Chaparral (4-2, 1-1), which gained 372 yards in 50 rushing attempts at Rancho Verde.Victor Gonzalez had a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Pumas. The interception was his third of the season.Terry Marcus scored both touchdowns for Rancho Verde (5-2, 1-1) on a 69-yard reception from Corey Barber in the first quarter and a 98-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

Temescal Canyon 45, Temecula Valley 35
Each team scored twice in the first minute, but it was four turnovers by Temecula Valley that made the difference in the Southwestern League game at Temecula Valley.

Three first-half turnovers -- two fumbles and an interception -- were converted into 20 points by Temescal Canyon, which included 11- and 10-yard scoring runs by quarterback Myles Eden.

Eden finished with 11 carries for 91 yards, and Jared Zinda rushed 20 times for 159 and two touchdowns of seven yards as the Eagles (7-0, 2-0) gained 388 yards and put themselves in the driver’s seat for a third consecutive league title.

Antonio Williams carried 23 times for 200 yards and touchdowns of 79, nine, eight and one yard for Temecula Valley (4-3, 1-1), which finished with 436 total yards. Melvin Blackmon completed 16 of 30 passes for 230 yards and a 33-yard touchdown to Greg Waters, but he also had two passes intercepted by Maurice Clark.

Clark scored a pivotal touchdown late in the first half, taking a cross-field lateral pass from Joey Villegas on a kickoff return and covering 75 yards to give Temescal Canyon a 35-21 lead with less than two minutes left.

The other big play was Temecula Valley’s fumble on the game-opening kickoff, recovered by Austin Welshiemer at the Temecula Valley 33-yard line. Three plays later, just 42 seconds into the game, Zinda had his first score.

Temescal Canyon got the ball to open the second half and opened a 21-point lead when Zinda scored his second touchdown for a 42-21 advantage.

What started off with a bang for Gabrielino turned into a very long night at Alhambra Keppel High, where Arroyo intercepted four passes and seized control of the Mission Valley League.

Quarterback Paul Zuniga of Gabrielino (6-1, 1-1), in his first game since being stabbed in his leg on Oct. 2, completed 17 of 37 passes for 296 yards. His screen pass to Jonathan Omar on the Eagles’ first play from scrimmage covered 77 yards, but the point-after attempt was blocked by Charles Kiem.

Arroyo’s Raul Ramirez scored the first of his two touchdowns from seven yards, culminating an 85-yard drive. His second score came from one yard with seven seconds left in the first half. He finished with 121 yards in 28 carries.

Arroyo (7-0, 2-0) broke the game open when Sergio Leon returned the second of his two interceptions 40 yards for a 21-6 lead. Quarterback Dominic Salmon ran in from 11 yards to make it 28-6 with 5:21 left in the third quarter.

In his second game back from a left elbow injury, Trevor Theriot rushed for 135 yards in 28 carries to lead the Sailors in a Sea View League game at Newport Harbor High.

Theriot, a 6-1, 225-pound pound senior, dislocated his elbow in the third week against Corona del Mar, an injury that still prevents him from straightening his arm. He rushed for 199 yards last week in a 10-10 tie against Santa Ana Foothill, a result that knocked the Sailors from the top 25.

Spencer Link also keyed the Newport Harbor offense, catching seven passes for 118 yards and scoring on a 44-yard reverse in the second quarter, one play after he caught a 34-yard pass up the sideline.

Alex Orth blocked a punt in the fourth quarter and then scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to give the Sailors (6-0-1, 1-0-1) a 21-0 lead.

Newport Haerbor’s defense, which recorded four sacks, kept Aliso Niguel (6-1, 1-1) out of the endzone until Tyler Zanolli scored on a 59-yard touchdown pass with 6 minutes 18 seconds remaining. Zanolli finished with nine catches for 116 yards.

Chino 17, Glendora 14
Durrell Chamorro of Chino had a tough first half Thursday night against Glendora, but redeemed himself by kicking a 35-yard game-winning field goal with 1 minute 49 seconds left to play in a 17-14 victory at Citrus College.

Chamorro, among the top kickers in the Southland, missed field goals of 39 and 41 yards in a scoreless first half, but made one when it counted.

“As a kicker, you always just think about the next kick,” said Chamorro, a senior put in a game-winning situation for the first time in his career. “I just had to focus.”

Chamorro’s kick was set up by a Shawn Oatis interception at the Glendora 24 with 3:42 to play. Chino (6-1, 2-0) had tied the score at 14-14 a minute earlier. A low snap started the attempt, but holder Art Gracia recovered and set up the ball in time for Chamorro’s boot.

R.J. Stanford led Chino with 144 yards and a touchdown in 25 carries. Gracia completed 11 of 18 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jacob Cook completed 13 of 25 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns for Glendora (5-2, 1-1), but also threw two interceptions.

In a game full of drama and countless clutch plays, Los Alamitos pulled out a 31-24, double-overtime victory over Huntington Beach Edison when Brian Shrock’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete at the five-yard line Thursday night at Gahr High in Cerritos.

“It was unbelievable,” Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said of a Sunset League game in which both teams seemingly refused to accept a loss.

Los Alamitos (6-1, 2-0), ranked No. 6 in the Southland by the Times, tied the score at 17-17 with four seconds left in regulation on a 32-yard field goal Dustin Abrams. That brought to a close a hectic fourth quarter in which Shrock was at one point the goat before becoming a hero for No. 3 Edison (5-2, 1-1).

Shrock, who completed 24 of 36 passes for 286 yards, had a pass intercepted by Orlando Scandrick, who returned the ball to the Edison five-yard line.

Jeremy Childs then caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Jim Barnes with 6:07 left to put the Griffins ahead, 14-10.Shrock then directed a 12-play, 70-yard drive that he kept alive with a 14-yard pass to Jimmy Flanagan on fourth down. Shrock scored the go-ahead touchdown with a two-yard run with 1:48 left.

In the first overtime, which allows each team the ball at the 25-yard line with four plays to score, Edison scored on a 23-yard pass from Shrock to Flanagan. Los Alamitos tied the score, 24-24, when Childs, who finished with 16 catches for 169 yards, caught a two-yard pass from Barnes.

Cortes Rice put Los Alamitos ahead for good with a 13-yard touchdown run in the second overtime. Rice finished with 183 yards rushing in 21 carries, including a 79-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game.

Edison received a stellar defensive performance in the fourth quarter from linebacker Josh Gage, who on one series recorded three tackles for losses against Rice. Los Alamitos responded with fourth-quarter sacks by linebacker John Hale and lineman Mike Aguayo.

The game-tying field goal by Abrams was déjà vu for his family. His older brother, Matt, defeated Edison with a game-winning field goal in 1997.

“That’s why we play football,” said an exhausted Edison defensive lineman Logan Galitski.

Shawn Boaz kicked a 26-yard field goal with nine seconds left to break a 30-30 tie and give San Dimas (5-2) the victory at Covina District Stadium.

With 6:57 remaining, Covina (3-4) drove 70 yards to score the tying touchdown. After both teams had to punt after not making first downs, San Dimas got the ball with 3:30 remaining and drove to the Colts’ nine-yard line to set up the winning kick.

Boaz, a senior wide receiver and safety, also had two touchdown catches in the game as he finished with seven receptions for 135 yards.

NONLEAGUE

Brethren Christian 45, Viewpoint 3
Backup quarterback Tommy Kilbane completed 15 of 28 passes for 338 yards and threw six touchdown passes in the lopsided victory.

Kilbane, a junior, made his second start of the season in place of Derrick Connor, who is out with a knee injury. Jeramy Knepper caught 10 of those passes for 202 yards and scores of 30 and 10 yards. Jeff Shakespeare also kicked a career-best 41-yard field goal for Brethren Christian (6-1).

Daniel Sulitzer kicked a 30-yard field to give Viewpoint (2-5) a first-quarter lead at Long Beach St. Anthony.

Cameron Smith ran for four touchdowns and 124 yards on nine carries for Bloomington (6-1, 2-1). Jordan Newton added 59 yards on three rushing attempts.
