Chloë Sevigny’s five favorite frocks
When asked to pick a few red-carpet favorites, Sevigny immediately singled out the gown she wore the year she was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in “Boys Don’t Cry.” (In this photo, she’s arriving with writer-director Harmony Korine.)
“The Oscars in 2000, for sure,” she said. “It was Alber [Elbaz] for Yves Saint Laurent and the Asprey [necklace] was like a Maltese cross. I’d been wearing Alber for YSL for a while and I was going into the archives and wearing vintage YSL — I was sort of having a YSL moment — and was wearing it for the whole campaign leading up to [the Academy Awards], so this was sort of the piece de la resistance. ... Actor-director Chloë Sevigny recaps some of her most memorable red-carpet moments.
“The dress I wore at Cannes the year ‘Brown Bunny’ [screened] was Alber [Elbaz] for Lanvin — which was one of his first Lanvin collections,” Sevigny said of another favorite dress. “It was a peach[-colored] patterned dress with all these crystals on netting. He had just started doing that and it was very him. I went without hair or makeup and I just felt very fresh in that dress. I still have it — I wore it to a wedding a couple of years ago — there’s just something very delicate about it that I love.” (KRT)
“Haley [Wollens] pulled a bunch of references to old Mugler, sent them to [creative director] Casey [Cadwallader], he did a bunch of sketches, they talked about it, he created a custom [dress] and then we did the fitting in Paris,” said Sevigny of the black silk crepe dress with a thigh-high leg slit. “The gloves came up and around [the shoulders] and across my back and then around the front almost like a choker, and it had this very pale pink, almost flesh-colored bustier. I liked it because it was custom, it had a train, that glove situation ... it just felt very glamorous. I wore it with this insanely big Chopard diamond piece.” (Daniele Venturelli / WireImage)
“[One of my favorites was] actually this year’s Vanity Fair party when I wore Preen,” said Sevigny. “It was black and kind of super-booby and [I wore] a big hair bow. [Stylist] Haley [Wollens] and I did that together and I went with Natasha [Lyonne] and she wore a black cocktail dress too. It just felt really fun to be there and I don’t necessarily showcase my décolletage that often so that was sort of fun too. I wasn’t taking myself too seriously.” (Daniele Venturelli / WireImage)

“I liked the Simone [Rocha] dress I wore to the Met Gala, which didn’t get that much press that year. It had a little cutout in the behind — you could see a little bit of my bum — and it was just sort of unexpected. I feel like so many actresses go and they’re [just there in] in a pretty gown.
