A 27-year-old Ventura man was arrested Friday on suspicion of stabbing his 1-year-old son to death, then calling police to report it, authorities said.
Adrian Navarrete-Gonzalez, who had injuries to his body, is being treated at Ventura County Medical Center but remains in custody, said Cmdr. Darin Schindler of the Ventura Police Department
Navarrete-Gonzalez is expected to survive, Schindler said. Once he is released, he will be booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of homicide.
Police received a 911 call about 1:45 a.m. Friday from the boy’s father who told dispatchers his son was dead. “That was all he said,” Schindler said.
When officers arrived at the home in the 400 block of Crocker Avenue, they found the boy dead from apparent stabs wound to the upper torso, Schindler said.
Navarrete-Gonzalez himself was rushed to surgery, Schindler said. Police declined to say if he had tried to stab himself.
The suspect had recently split from his wife and his son was visiting him when he was killed, Schindler said.
According to police, the crime occurred in the father’s room. The man shared the home with eight to 10 others, some of whom rented rooms there, Schindler said.
“The other people were unaware anything had happened until we got there,” he said.
