A visitor to a Florida art show Friday night stabbed another guest near an exhibit from a Los Angeles gallery, turning Art Basel Miami Beach into a crime scene, the Miami Herald reported.
The incident took place at the Miami Beach Convention Center, where the assailant, who has been identified as 24-year-old Siyuan Zhao of New York, stabbed another woman in the neck and shoulders with an X-Acto knife.
The Miami Beach Police Department told the Herald the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, and said she was transported to a local hospital; Zhao was arrested at the scene.
The stabbing occurred near the booth of Los Angeles’ Freedman Fitzpatrick Gallery, and some festival patrons said they initially mistook the bloody attack for performance art.
“The attack was an isolated incident that was immediately secured,” a spokeswoman for Art Basel said in a statement. “The suspect was apprehended by police who were at the scene within seconds of the incident. ... Our thoughts are with the victim.”
Calls to the Miami Beach Police Department were not immediately returned.
