Dodgers defeat White Sox, 6-1, in exhibition opener

Highlights from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 6-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox:

AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers manufactured a run in an ideal fashion for new Manager Dave Roberts in the first inning. Howie Kendrick walked and took second on a single by Andre Ethier. Yasiel Puig drove in Kendrick with a single and Ethier went first-to-third. Yasmani Grandal added another run-scoring single soon after. “That’s how we draw it up,” Roberts said. “We’ll take plenty more of those.” Alex Guerrero hit a towering home run over the left-field bullpen in the second.

ON THE MOUND: Clayton Kershaw limited the White Sox to one hit and one walk in two innings. He struck out two. “I felt all right,” Kershaw said. “It’s good to get out there and face another team. Definitely some things to work on.” Kershaw was not thrilled with his fastball location. Joe Blanton struck out three in two scoreless innings. Carlos Frias gave up a run but also stretched out to two innings.

EXTRA BASES: Roberts did not approach his first exhibition game as Dodgers manager with much sentimentality. He did not save the lineup card or take a moment to soak in the atmosphere. “I try to stay in the moment, and not try to get out of the moment too often,” he said . . . Scott Van Slyke stole a base. He attempted just four stolen bases in 2015.
