Boys’ basketball: El Camino Real routs Taft in West Valley opener

El Camino Real, the defending City Section Division I champion, isn’t about to give up the West Valley League title this season. The Conquistadores opened league play on Wednesday with a convincing 72-52 victory over Taft.
Brandon Russell had 18 points and Chris Terry 15. Darrius Henderson led Taft with 17 points. The Conquistadores don’t have much size, but they play aggressively on defense, box out and play as a team. Granada Hills opened with a 59-37 win over Birmingham. Jason Horosny scored 17 points. Cleveland defeated Chatsworth, 55-48.
In the Western League, Ellis Salahudin had 18 points in Westchester’s 58-45 win over Palisades.
In the East Valley League, Poly defeated Chavez, 75-45. Cesar Reyes led the Parrots with 31 points. Verdugo Hills defeated Monroe, 68-31. Adrian Gutierrez had 26 points and 15 rebounds. Grant put together an 18-0 run to defeat Arleta, 63-57.
In the Coliseum League, Crenshaw defeated Hawkins, 101-20. Dorsey defeated Locke, 93-24.
