Boys’ basketball: Redondo holds on for Open Division thriller over Roosevelt

The best opening game of the Southern Section Open Division playoffs on Friday night was at Redondo High, where Sea Hawks Coach Reggie Morris Jr. had a little bit of a helpless feeling on Friday night. There was nothing he could do as Jemarl Baker of Eastvale Roosevelt launched a three-point attempt from about 30 feet as time was running out.

“He got a good look,” Morris said. “God was on our side.”

The shot didn’t fall, and Redondo came away with a 56-54 victory to advance to a Tuesday quarterfinal game at home against Sierra Canyon. Ryse Williams had 15 points for Redondo.

Roosevelt played well enough to win. Matt Mitchell failed on two free-throw attempts with 5.4 seconds left. He finished with 12 points. Baker and Jalen Taylor added 10 points apiece.

“I just knew it was going in,” Baker said “It fell a little bit short. I shoot deep shots all the time. It was nothing new. I just left it short.”

Jordan Griffin scored 33 points in Corona Centennial’s 83-64 win over Compton. Spencer Freedman had 17 points in Mater Dei’s 58-46 win over Cantwell-Sacred Heart. Deveral Ramsey had 21 points in Sierra Canyon’s 85-40 win over Los Alamitos.

Bryce Peters scored 23 points in Damien’s 65-61 win over Crespi. Inglewood defeated Alemany, 76-74. Jordan Schakel scored 19 points in Bishop Montgomery’s 68-51 win over Orange Lutheran. Zac Jervis scored 20 points for Orange Lutheran.

Lonzo Ball had 30 points in Chino Hills’ 100-66 win over Santa Margarita.

Tuesday’s matchups: Chino Hills at Inglewood; Centennial at Mater Dei; Sierra Canyon at Redondo; Damien at Bishop Montgomery.
