Football: Narbonne shows it has depth, talent

Narbonne held its annual green-gold scrimmage on Wednesday night. The gold team came onto the field and ran through the green team warming up. That amused everyone. But in a sign of how much depth and talent the Gauchos have, the game was close throughout. The gold prevailed, 20-14.

Narbonne has more than 150 players in its football program, and the varsity showed that it has some backups capable of pushing the starters.

One of the most impressive players was sophomore running back Cory Jackson, who broke off a couple impressive runs. Ditto for junior running back Kameron Denmark. The best player on the field was the speedy Sean Riley, a running back who’s capable of scoring any time he touches the ball.

Quarterbacks Roman Ale and Jalen Chatman give the Gauchos two solid players to call upon. Receiver Tre Walker had an outstanding catch for a touchdown.

After several weeks of practice in which the defense has been dominating, the two offenses were able to move the ball at times.

Coach Manuel Douglas needs to clean up some mistakes that led to penalties, but Narbonne is the clear City Section Division I title favorite. The Gauchos scrimmage Chaminade next Thursday and open against Long Beach Poly on Sept. 3 at home.
