Football: Running back Sterling Salguero leaves Birmingham, may be headed to Calabasas

All-City running back Sterling Salguero of Birmingham has checked out of school and is likely headed to Calabasas, Coach Jim Rose said Friday.
Salguero rushed for 1,837 yards last season as a junior.
If Salguero ends up at Calabasas, he will join a growing list of transfer students playing for the Coyotes.
Since the beginning of last season, more than a dozen players have switched schools to enroll at Calabasas, according to the Southern Section eligibility list. A majority are listed as having eligibility via “valid change of residence.”
It is up to the school to confirm the “valid change of residence.”
Calabasas went 6-6 last season under first-year Coach Casey Clausen.
The Coyotes also could be getting standout junior receiver-defensive back Darnay Holmes from Newbury Park. Holmes’ family is reportedly moving to Calabasas, but there has been no annoucement whether he’s staying or leaving Newbury Park.
Among the transfers at Calabasas are Keyshawn Johnson Jr. from Mission Viejo, Brian Hightower from North Carolina, Alec Stevenson from Malibu, Marquel Dismuke from Compton Dominguez and Daniel Ofa from Long Beach Cabrillo.
Calabasas is in the Canyon League with Simi Valley, Oak Park and Agoura.
Former Oak Park Athletic Director Rob Hall said of the Coyotes’ transfers: “I think this is the new normal. The Clausens go over there and they’re a draw.”
