FRISCO, Texas — Carli Lloyd scored off a rebound of her penalty kick in the 80th minute and the United States beat Mexico, 1-0, on Saturday to clinch a spot in the CONCACAF Olympic-qualifying semifinals.
Lloyd’s penalty shot, after a Mexico hand ball in the penalty area, went to the middle of the goal and was blocked by Cecilia Santiago. Lloyd buried the rebound, with Santiago still on the ground, for her 84th goal.
The winners of the semifinals, set for Friday at Houston, will qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
The U.S. will conclude group play Monday night against Puerto Rico. The other game Monday, between Mexico and Costa Rica, will determine the other semifinalist from Group A.
Costa Rica defeated Puerto Rico, 9-0, on Saturday.
