Shabazz Muhammad looks to add to family history

Shabazz Muhammad, who signed with UCLA on Wednesday, has sat atop the high school basketball world all season. Where he falls in his family’s pecking order is still to be determined.

Muhammad, a 6-foot-6 forward from Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, has plenty of in-house competition.

There is his mother, Faye Muhammad, who was a basketball and track star at Long Beach State. There is his father, Ron Holmes, who was a four-year starter at USC. There is his aunt, Robin Holmes, who was a four-year starter at Cal State Fullerton.

Add to the group uncle Stephone Paige, a former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver.

In short, settling on who carves the turkey at Thanksgiving could become extremely competitive.

Faye Muhammad, who played as Faye Paige, is a member of Long Beach State’s hall of fame. She finished third in the NCAA 400 meters as a freshman in 1983 before a knee injury derailed her career. After spending 21 months recovering, Muhammad returned to lead Long Beach’s basketball team to a 29-5 record as a senior in 1985-86.

Ron Holmes played at USC from 1981-85, scoring 1,211 career points. He averaged 15.8 points per game in 1985, when the Trojans won a share of the Pac-10 Conference title.

Robin Holmes played at Fullerton from 1982-86 and ranks fifth on the Titans’ all-time list with 1,731 points. She is vice president for student affairs at Oregon.

Stephone Paige, who played at Saddleback College and Fresno State, played nine seasons with the Chiefs, finishing with 377 career receptions.

And Shabazz? UCLA fans are expecting him to rise to the top of the family tree.
