Some key dates in recent Lakers history

Key moments in Lakers franchise history since the 2009-10 season in which the team won its 16th NBA title behind the play of Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. The Clippers, meanwhile, missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

June 2010

Lakers beat their hated rivals, the Boston Celtics, in Game 7 to win their 16th NBA championship. It’s the Lakers’ last title with Phil Jackson as coach.

May 2011

Jackson retires after the Lakers are eliminated in the second round of the playoffs. Ex-Cavaliers coach Mike Brown is picked to replace Jackson.

July-August 2012

Lakers trade for former MVP guard Steve Nash and All-Star center Dwight Howard. Fans start thinking of another dream team.

November 2012

Lakers fire Brown after a 1-4 start. Nash fractures his leg in the second game of the season, suffers nerve damage, and is limited the rest of the season. Team hires Mike D’Antoni as coach, spurning an offer by Jackson to return to the bench.

February 2013

Lakers longtime owner Jerry Buss, 80, dies of cancer.

April 2013

Kobe Bryant tears his Achilles’ tendon at end of the regular season. Lakers are swept in a first-round playoff series by San Antonio.

July 2013

Howard, who feuded with Bryant, passes up returning to the Lakers as a free agent and signs with Houston.

December 2013

Bryant fractures a bone in his knee and misses the rest of the season; he plays only six games.

January 2015

Bryant has surgery on a torn rotator cuff, ending his 19th season with the Lakers after playing in only 35 games.

June 2015

Lakers surprise many by drafting Ohio State point guard D’Angelo Russell with the No. 2 overall pick.

July 2015

All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, the Lakers’ top free-agent target, signs with San Antonio.

Bryant announces he will retire after the season.

February 2016

Lakers enter All-Star break with the worst record in Western Conference. Team will miss the playoffs for the third-season in a row, a franchise record.
