London Olympics: Mike and Bob Bryan win doubles gold in tennis

LONDON --They’ve won the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and were part of a winning U.S. Davis Cup team.

The last major missing piece for Mike and Bob Bryan happened to be an Olympic gold medal.

The American twins completed that to-do career list, winning the Olympic men’s doubles on Saturday at the venerable All England Club by beating the French duo of Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

The Bryan brothers had won an Olympic medal previously, taking the bronze in 2008, also beating a French team, Llodra and Arnaud Clement.

The International Tennis Federation published a book for the London Olympics featuring the world’s top players, looking at their childhood dreams and Olympic ambitions.

The Bryans said they were inspired by the 1992 gold-medal winning basketball Dream Team.

Said Mike, in the book: “There’s an energy about the Olympics that you just can’t explain unless you’re there. It’s always better than you think it’s going to be, you can’t prepare yourself for that kind of electricity. There’s so many people that can’t even win a medal but they’re just happy to be there enjoying the experiences.”
