England: ‘Downton Abbey’ tour of filming areas, Oxford, Cambridge

As if the Summer Olympic Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weren’t reason enough to go to England this summer, here’s one more: a “Downton Abbey” tour.
The itinerary includes filming locations for the British BBC TV series set during the first World War. It starts in London with visits to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Imperial War Museum, perfect places to learn more about wartime Britain in the early 20th century.
The tour travels to Bampton in Oxfordshire, the village where “Downton Abbey” is filmed (yes, it’s meant to be Yorkshire). Participants also visit the stunning Highclere Castle, which was the Crawley family’s country estate that was turned into a hospital for wounded officers. (The castle really was used for this purpose during the war. ) Tours of Oxford, Cambridge and Henley-on-Thames round out the itinerary.
When: The seven-day trip is available on dates from July to September.
Price: $4,500 per person, double occupancy (price varies, depending on hotel options selected). It includes hotels, breakfast, airport transfers, a historian as private guide and driver. Airfare is extra.
