Three men cleared in Mexican grenade attack

MEXICO CITY — Authorities have cleared three men who were arrested in connection with a deadly grenade attack on a public celebration in western Mexico.
The federal attorney general’s office said in a statement issued late Thursday that the men had “no link” to the attack Monday on crowds gathered for Independence Day festivities in Morelia, capital of Michoacan state.
Seven people died and more than 100 others were injured in the twin blasts, which Mexican authorities blamed on organized crime.
The three men were arrested Thursday in the northern state of Zacatecas after being taken to a hospital following a car crash. Mexican news reports said they drew suspicion because they had wounds that resembled the shrapnel injuries suffered by victims of the grenade attack in Morelia.
No other arrests have been confirmed.
Mexican authorities distributed a composite drawing of a balding man with a mustache. Witnesses said he begged forgiveness as he lobbed a grenade into the crowd.
Federal officials are investigating the possible involvement of a Michoacan-based drug gang known as La Familia.
