Local News in Brief : Grant to Aid Homeless

A $3.8-million final installment of money raised by the cross-country Hands Across America event has been distributed to 61 groups aiding the hungry and homeless nationwide, organizers said Monday in Los Angeles.
The money was raised in conjunction with the May 25, 1986, demonstration in which an estimated 6 million people joined hands.
One of the largest individual grants went to a Washington, D.C.,-based organization called the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which received $250,000. Other grants in excess of $100,000 included the California Organizing Committee, which received $185,000, and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee in Ohio, which received $104,000.
Hands Across America said it earlier distributed $12 million to nearly 1,700 organizations.
