San Diego Sports Et cetera : Francis Parker Wins in State Volleyball Playoffs

Tina Harris had 12 kills to lead defending state Division III champion Francis Parker High School to a 15-1, 15-2, 15-8 volleyball victory over Flintridge Sacred Heart in a first-round state playoff match at San Diego Tuesday night. Heidi West added seven kills for Parker.

“I think they were a little intimidated,” Francis Parker Coach John Cook said. “I saw them play a week ago, and they were a completely different team. We just jumped on them really quick.”

Francis Parker plays host to the winner of the Woodlake-Marantha match for the Southern California championship Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Francis Parker was the only San Diego Section team to win in the first round of the state playoffs. Thousand Oaks defeated University of San Diego High School, 15-11, 15-10, 17-15, in a Division II match. In Division I, Irvine defeated Mt. Carmel, 15-7, 15-5, 5-15, 15-0, and Palisades defeated section 3-A champion Grossmont, 8-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-0.

Claudia Johnon and Ximena Fajardo had 14 kills each to lead United States International University to a 15-7, 15-12, 16-14 victory over visiting Cal State Northridge (31-7). Senior Nancy Dome had 11 kills in her final match for USIU (19-8).

Angelica Jackson, a senior middle blocker on the San Diego State volleyball team, has been named to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. all-star team. Jackie Mendez, a junior outside hitter, received honorable mention recognition.

FOOTBALL

Todd Santos was named the most valuable player on the San Diego State football team for the second season in a row at the team’s annual awards banquet Tuesday night.

Santos, who set a National Collegiate Athletic Assn. record with 11,425 career passing yards, became the first two-time winner of the award since wide receiver Gary Garrison in 1964-65.

Other awards went to senior end Brett Faryniarz (outstanding defensive lineman), senior tackle Dave DesRochers (outstanding offensive lineman), senior cornerback Clarence Nunn (coaches award), senior defensive back Chuck Nixon (president’s award), senior offensive guard Reggie Blaylock (most inspirational), senior offensive tackle Mike Knutson (most improved), linebacker Morey Paul (outstanding freshman), senior punter Wayne Ross (special team most valuable player) and sophomore linebacker John Wesselman (top point man).

Blaylock, Faryniarz, Nunn and Santos also received awards for their work as captains.

BASKETBALL

Clayton Williams had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Point Loma Nazarene College to a 91-82 nonconference victory over Claremont. Brian Thurston had 14 points and Steve Riddle added 12 for Point Loma Nazarene (2-0). Claremont is 1-2.

The game ended with 49 seconds left when a slam by Riddle shattered the backboard as the rim failed to break away. Claremont’ Mike Dawe suffered several cuts on his arms and shoulders from the backboard glass, but was not seriously injured.

Mark Gottfried scored 23 points on 8-of-8 shooting to lead Athletes in Action to an 81-76 victory over Samford (Ala.). Gib Hinz added 19 points and 13 rebounds for AIA (14-6).

GOLF

United States International University is seventh after two rounds of the of UCLA Desert Classic women’s golf tournament at the Misssion Hills Resort in Palm Springs.

Georgia and Texas Christian are tied for first at 592 and Tulsa is second at 593. USIU has 601 and San Diego State is 11th in the 15-team field at 610.

Steph Lowe of Georgia and Chris Miller of TCU are tied for the individual lead at two-over-par 142. USIU’s Alison Shapcott and SDSU’s Wendy Modic are tied for seventh at 147.
