Recktenwald Cited by Mission Coaches

Bart Recktenwald of Orange Coast College was named the Mission Conference offensive player of the year in a vote of the conference’s football coaches Tuesday at Saddleback College.
Recktenwald, a sophomore, set a national single-season record for all-purpose yardage with 2,495 this season. He also led the Mission Conference in rushing with 1,255 yards. In addition, he was named first-team kick and punt returner.
Saddleback Coach Ken Swearingen, who led the Gauchos to their 14th conference title, was named coach of the year.
Howard Gasser of Saddleback and Mike Jordan of Grossmont were selected first-team quarterbacks and Rancho Santiago’s Glen Campbell was a first-team running back.
OCC’s Junior Tagaloa and Saddleback’s Scott Miller were named first-team wide receivers, and OCC’s Greg Gibson was selected the first-team tight end.
Saddleback’s Doug Gann (tackle) and Adam Mapuatuli (center) were named first-team linemen along with Derek Sang (tackle) and Rob Byers (center) of Rancho Santiago.
Randy Hord, a defensive tackle from Riverside, was named the defensive player of the year. Brad Schmidt (defensive end), Tom Schooler (linebacker) and Gary Renteria (linebacker), all from Saddleback, were selected to the defensive first team.
