COSTA MESA — South Coast Repertory has announced the names of three playwrights who will participate in its sixth annual Hispanic Playwrights Project--a development program composed of workshop rehearsals that will culminate with an onstage reading.
This year’s program--which gets under way July 31--will be attended by writers Guillermo Reyes, Octavio Solis and Edit Villarreal. All have previously participated in the program (Reyes in the inaugural year, 1986; Solis and Villarreal in 1989).
The featured plays and their reading dates are:
* “R & J,” by Villarreal (on Aug. 9 at 7:30 p.m.), about the ill-fated love affair between a young undocumented alien and the daughter of an assimilated upper-class Chicana.
* “La Illuminada” (Aug. 10 at 2:30 p.m.), by Solis, about a man who creates his own “alchemical science” to bring back his deceased lover, as a hologram.
* “September 11” (Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m.), by Reyes, about an independent-minded Chilean woman who grapples with a spate of options--including marriage, and an offer to come to America as a maid to the stars--on the anniversary of her country’s “liberation” by Gen. Pinochet.
Kicking off the weekend of readings will be the Aug. 8 fund-raising party, “Una Noche del Teatro.” Tickets are $25 apiece. Information: (714) 957-2602.
Tickets to each of the readings are $6 (seniors and students are $2). Information: (714) 957-4033.
